Celebrate National Reading Month

March is National Reading Month, and it's the perfect time to reimagine story time as something a little more playful, calming, and connected.

At A Yoga Storytelling Adventure, we believe reading can be more than just words on a page - it can be a moment to move, breathe, and connect with your child.

Here are a few simple ways to bring mindfulness and movement into your reading routine this spring:

Make story time interactive

Pause as you read and invite your child to share how they think a character feels, what might happen next, or how they'd move like the character. This keeps kids engaged and builds emotional awareness.

Add gentle movement

Try reading a page, then acting it out with a simple yoga pose or stretch. Movement helps children focus, remember the story, and express themselves in a natural way.

Create a calm reading moment

Before you begin, take three slow breaths together and do one gentle stretch. A calm body helps create a calm mind - perfect for settling into a story.

Take story time outside

Spring is a wonderful opportunity to read outdoors. A blanket, fresh air, and a few nature-inspired poses can spark creativity and joy.

If you are looking for a story that gently supports calm, focus, and relaxation, you may enjoy Peace and Quiet, a mindful story designed to help children slow down and feel grounded.

Healing Through Story, Yoga, and Meditation

Camp Brave Hearts is a special place dedicated to children who have lost loved ones. It is a weeklong event sponsored by Hospice of Acadiana. Each year, Mel and I volunteer to bring together the therapeutic practices of story, yoga, and meditation to help young hearts mend and find peace amidst their grief.

Camp Brave Hearts stands as a sanctuary where children can express their emotions freely, surrounded by peers who understand their pain. This supportive environment fosters a sense of community, reminding them that they are not alone in their journey through grief.

Stories have always been a fundamental part of human experience, serving as a bridge between individuals and a means to convey emotions, lessons, and shared experiences. When we tell stories to the kids, we see their eyes light up. It's like they see a part of themselves in the characters, and that connection helps them process their own feelings. Storytelling opens a door to healing by allowing them to explore their grief in a safe and nurturing way.

We then guide the children through a gentle heart opening yoga sequence and a short meditation practice. These sessions are designed to help the kids connect with their inner selves, find calmness, and release the tension that grief often brings.

It is our hope that yoga and meditation provide the kids with tools to manage their stress and emotions. Through mindful breathing and gentle movements, may they learn to find a sense of peace and grounding, even amidst their sorrow.

Together, we can continue to create a nurturing environment where children can heal, grow, and find hope in the midst of their grief. Thank you for supporting our mission and helping us make a lasting impact on the lives of children.

Perhaps you too feel sad at times. If so, we invite you to practice this short meditation.

Summer Safari Adventure

Hey there adventurers!

As the temperature rises and the sun shines brighter, we thought it was time for a wild journey. Get ready to explore the savannah, meet exotic animals and cool down with a short but fun yoga story!

This safari is perfect for kids looking to stretch, breathe, and have a roaring good time. We’ll start with active and engaging poses and move into calming poses, and remember, do asymmetrical poses on both sides.

Let’s fly away in a big jet plane. We are on our way to Africa where the air is warm, and the sky is painted in shades of blue and orange.

1.         Airplane pose – Warrior III

Stand tall in Mountain pose, stand on one leg and lift one leg behind you as your lift your arms out front of you or in a big T like airplane wings, lean forward and balance. (repeat on the opposite side)

It took a long time, but we made it! Stepping off the plane and onto the golden grasslands of the savannah, we hear the rustle of leaves and the calls of distant animals. Look! A graceful giraffe is munching on leaves high up in a tree.

2.        Giraffe stretch – Standing Side Stretch

Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart. Reach your arms up high, clasp your hands together, and gently sway side to side like a giraffe stretching its neck to nibble on the highest leaves. Feel the stretch in your sides and take in the view from up high.

The sun is getting hotter when we notice a refreshing waterhole. Elephants are splashing water and zebras are taking sips. It’s the perfect place for the animals to cool off!

3.        Elephant pose – Wide Leg Forward Fold

Step your feet wide apart. Lift your arms overhead and interlace your fingers. Fold forward and let your arms dangle in front of you like an elephant's trunk. Take a deep breath in, swing your trunk up, and exhale as you swing it down. Imagine you're splashing cool water everywhere!

4.        Zebra pose – Warrior I

From Wide Leg Forward Fold step the feet together, then step one leg back. Inhale and lift the arms overhead, exhale as you bend the front knee. Pause and breathe. Feel strong and steady like a zebra standing tall and proud. (repeat on the opposite side)

As the sun sets, the sky turns a beautiful shade of pink and purple. A lion roars, will we meet the king of the jungle? Playful monkey’s chatter, are they saying good night?

5.        Lion Pose

Get down on your knees, spread your fingers wide like lion's claws, take a deep breath, and let out a mighty ROAR! Feel the power and strength of the lion as you release all your worries.

6.        Monkey pose -Hamstring stretch

Sit on the ground and stretch one leg out in front of you and the other leg behind. The hands are alongside the front leg. Gently fold over the front leg. Imagine you're a monkey leaping from tree to tree. (repeat on the opposite side)

The animals start to settle down. It’s time to relax and unwind. A rhino rests nearby and so will we. It’s time for some gentle stretches and a peaceful end to our safari adventure.

7.        Rhino pose – Child’s pose

Kneel on the ground, sit back on your heels, and stretch your arms forward, lowering your forehead to the ground. Breathe deeply and feel the warmth of the setting sun on your back. This pose helps us relax and feel safe, just like the animals resting for the night.

8.        Rest pose - Savasana

Lie down on your back with your arms and legs spread out like a star. Close your eyes and take slow, deep breaths. Imagine you’re looking up at the twinkling stars in the savannah night sky. Let your body melt into the ground, feeling completely relaxed.

Remember, just like the animals of the savannah, we are strong, graceful, playful, and peaceful. Keep practicing your yoga, stay cool this summer, and always be ready for the next adventure!

Benefits of Fast Yoga Poses with Kids

Kids often have a lot of energy and a strong desire to move. Moving quickly through poses helps keep them attentive and aware. They notice the movement of energy, the rhythm, and the flow. Yoga sequences are often done with one pose per breath. This fast-paced approach is a great way to get kids active, whether in a classroom or at home in the morning. You can go through the sequence a couple of times and really get the energy moving!

Benefits of Slow Yoga Poses with Kids

Trying out poses one at a time and staying in them for a breath or two is great for building strength and flexibility. Yoga is good for building muscles, and this is especially true when we practice poses slowly. Doing yoga at a slower pace helps kids focus on their alignment, which can help keep them from hurting themselves. Slowing down also naturally brings more focus to breath and mindfulness. Kids can learn about body anatomy, proprioception (awareness of their body in space), and body control when doing yoga poses one at a time. Additionally, practicing yoga slowly teaches kids about patience and stamina.

Finding the right balance between fast and slow yoga poses can help create a fun yet engaging and effective yoga practice for kids, keeping them active and mindful throughout the summer.

May is Mental Health Month

Here’s a short sequence to practice with your kiddos! Begin in Mountain pose and move clockwise, end nice and calm in Rest pose.

Just like adults, children’s ability to relax has a significant impact on their mental health. The state of balance doesn’t always come naturally, that is why we ‘practice’ yoga. A regular yoga practice allows children to redirect their energy, calming both the body and the mind. Yoga increases a child’s well-being and enhances self-worth and may be helpful for those who are destructive and aggressive as well.

Anyone can do yoga, there is no need to worry about getting it wrong. The difference between yoga and other sports is that we move slowly into and out of poses while focusing on the breath. Gentle stretches relax us. Improved posture, balance, strength, and flexibility are a few of the physical benefits.

Compassion and empathy are developed. Memory and overall mood are enhanced and controlled studies have shown that yoga helps students’ anxiety as well as behavior.

We want our children to reach their full potential. As parents and educators, we have the power to help them succeed. Yoga has proven to be a great way to support our kids - physically, mentally, and emotionally.

A Yoga Storytelling Adventure engages children through social-emotional learning, mindful movement, and imaginative play. They develop habits and skills that last a lifetime and support future happiness and success!

All our eBooks will be FREE May 24 and 25 for Mental Health Month. Grab one and let us know what you think!

Fall Fun!

Why combine story and yoga?

Because there is no better way to learn than through imaginative play!

Our Kids Yoga Stories enhance children’s natural curiosity about the world, encourage their innate creativity, and engage them in mindful movement. Improving the health and well-being of children is our mission and why we started writing books in the first place!

Here is a simple story and yoga sequence using a multi-sensory approach for some FALL fun!

Yoga is an ideal exercise for parents and children to practice together. It gets energy moving when the body is slow and slows energy down when the body is hyperactive.

No special equipment is needed. Comfy clothes, bare feet, a non-slip surface and space to move is all that’s required. Yoga mats are nice but not necessary. Practice this fall sequence outside on the earth.

Practicing with your child helps them develop healthy habits for overall well-being; physical, mental, and emotional health. Don’t worry about kids getting the pose perfect. The most important thing is to get them to become aware of their body, to move slowly and be mindful of the breath.

Hold each pose for a breath or two as you breathe in and out slowly.

Use your senses and your imagination and FALL into A Yoga Storytelling Adventure!

1.   Stand tall – Mountain pose

I stand tall, look around and notice.

Stand strong with your arms at your sides, your shoulders stacked on top of your hips, your head reaching high to the sky, and breathe deep.

Benefit – improves posture, stability, and body awareness

2.  Tree – Tree pose

The days are getting cooler. A new season is beginning, and the leaves on the trees are changing colors.

From Mountain pose come onto the toes of one foot. Turn the knee out to the side and rest the toes on the ground or place the sole of the foot on the lower leg. Bring your heads together at your heart and slowly reach your arms overhead. Balance and breathe. Release the pose and repeat with the opposite foot.

Benefit – improves balance, and develops a strong core

3.  The Wind – Standing Side Stretch

A gentle wind blows, and the colorful leaves begin to rustle.

From Mountain pose slowly inhale and lift one arm up then exhale as you reach over for a gentle side stretch. Pause and feel the stretch. Switch arms and repeat the stretch on the opposite side. Inhale as you lift your arm, exhale as you bend. Mindfully move from side to side a few times. Notice the strength of our arms and legs. Wiggle your fingers!

Benefit – stretches the shoulders and arms, increases spinal mobility and improves breathing capacity

4. Leaves falling – Dancer Pose

A red leaf falls to the ground, and then an orange one. They look like they are dancing in the breeze!

From Mountain pose, lean forward and reach your arms out in front as you lift one leg out behind you. Perhaps you bend your knee and reach back, and grab hold of the foot with your hand. Come back to mountain and repeat on the opposite side.

Benefit - strengthens the feet, ankles, legs, core, back, arms and shoulders, as it improves balance and concentration

5. Gather Leaves – Forward Fold

I rake the leaves and gather them into a big pile.

From Mountain pose, hinge at the hips and allow your arms and head to hang down towards the ground. It’s ok to bend your knees. Hold the pose for a breath or two and then round up slowly.

Benefits – stretches the legs, develops core stability and strength, improves digestion

6. Fall into the Leaves – Triangle pose

The leaves look soft and fluffy like a cloud, and I fall into them.

From Mountain pose step one foot back and turn it out to the side. Raise the arms to shoulder height and reach out with the front hand, now tip over like a teapot. The front hand reaches to the shin and the back hand reaches to the sky. Release the pose, come back into Mountain pose and repeat on the opposite side.

Benefits - strengthens the legs and back, stretches the thighs and shoulders, energizes the body, improves balance

 7.   Toss leaves – Lunge Pose

Kneeling down I toss them in the air!

From Mountain pose set one foot back and bring the knee down to the ground. Lift the arms up overhead and breathe. Release the pose and repeat on the opposite side.

Benefits – stretches the hip flexors, improves balance and stability, strengthens the core

8.   Rest – Easy pose

That was so much fun! Now it is time to rest, I am grateful for the seasons!

Sit with your legs crossed, seat on the ground and head held high to the sky. Hands rest on your knees. Breathe.

Benefits – improves postural awareness, calming and soothing

Fall Blessings,

Kathe

Mental Health Awareness

May is mental health awareness month, and we are passionate about story and yoga’s ability to promote not only literacy but also health and well-being.

Yoga is a skill that will support your kids for life. If you have never practiced yoga, now is the perfect time to give it a try. You and your kids will benefit. Sharing story and yoga with your kids will build a bond that you will be ever so grateful for.

Our stories offer social emotional learning skills, mindful movement and imaginative play! Parents and kids play and have fun together as well as learn to be still and quiet.

Listening to wisdom stories, practicing yoga, simple breathing exercises and easy meditations are all beneficial habits that will last a lifetime. They support happiness, health, and relationships!

Children are natural yogis; most kids are flexible and willing to try new things. Let it be fun and something that feels good for both of you. Yoga is non-competitive, anyone can practice.

Yoga is different than other forms of exercise. Strength, flexibility, and balance are developed as are body, mind, and emotions. Research has found that yoga supports mental health issues like anxiety and depression, even ADHD.

Yoga helps children become calm, confident, and compassionate. In a noisy and chaotic world, yoga helps focus the mind, body, and emotions. Create a space where you can practice together without judgement or expectation.

Learning how to relax, breathe, and release tension is a life skill we all need, they help us to deal with life situations. We all know that mental health is just as important as physical health!

Spring into Homeschooling!

Homeschooling or considering homeschooling?

We are thrilled to announce Mel’s upcoming podcast interview with Bex Buzzie on The Homeschool Advantage.

Listen here https://realedtalk.podbean.com/

If you homeschool or are considering homeschooling you won’t want to miss this.

Bex Buzzie is a teacher, coach and educational course content creator from San Diego, California. She connects homeschoolers to vendors, curriculum content creators, coops and more. The Homeschool Advantage is here to give you the leg up in a world that is slightly upside down.

For several decades now there has been a huge exodus from the public school system and it will probably continue. Tons of resources are available, and parents may feel overwhelmed as they research suppliers.

The Homeschool Advantage works as a liaison. Parents can connect with the creator of content and see if what they offer resonates with them. A win-win!

We know parents as educators are innovators themselves and are continuously looking to expand their curriculums. We hope we can help them to fulfill their mission with a fun way to incorporate social emotional learning, mindful movement, and imaginative play into the homeschool classroom with A Yoga Storytelling Adventure.

Parents and teachers are discovering ways to use story and yoga creatively in the classroom with our FREE 10 page Resource Guide filled with tips.

Active Listening = Good Communication

A benefit of combining Story and Yoga

Have you ever told a child to do something and they said OKAY, but then find that it hasn’t been done?

It’s not unusual for kids to sometimes tune you out, however if you are constantly having to repeat things there may be something else going on. Is the child not actively listening? Do they not comprehend what you are saying?

We often confuse listening with hearing. Listening is more than just hearing what is being said. Listening is the ability to understand the meaning of words and then relate to them in some way. When children hear a story, good listening skills and comprehension enables them to understand it, remember it, and even retell it in their own words. That’s what A Yoga Storytelling Adventure books to are all about!

Good listeners grow up to be good communicators. Communication is the foundation for creating healthy and positive relationships. When we communicate effectively, we are able to tell others how we feel in a positive and productive manner. Effective communication is built on respect, respect for oneself as well as for the other person. Indeed being respectful while communicating can lead to being more caring and compassionate toward others as well as ourselves. Through active listening and good communication, we have the ability to create positive relationships.

Combining story and yoga engages kids in active listening and communication. A Yoga Storytelling Adventure kids yoga stories makes reading an interactive activity; both listener and reader participate through eye contact and facial expressions, being interested and paying attention, and acting out the story with yoga poses. This helps children remember the beginning, the middle and the end of the story and this increased engagement promotes deep learning. They can now relate as they are now a part of the story, and are able to recall it. Comprehension complete!!

Another fun interactive activity is to encourage kids to retell the story in their own words using a story circle, which is a simple method of passing a story around. In a classroom setting this gives each child a chance to practice storytelling, but even a parent and one child can do this.

Active listening and good communication are keys to social and emotional learning, and combining story and yoga build listening and communication skills!

Why combine story and yoga?

Story and yoga build literacy skills that’s why - language, physical literacy and emotional literacy!

Story and yoga both come from a place of stillness. Story settles the body down so the mind can listen, and yoga settles the mind down so we can become aware of our bodies. We find repose from the frenetic pace of life. When children learn to focus their energies, they gain control of their lives.

Here are 12 benefits of combining story and yoga.

#1

Story and yoga promote literacy, health and well-being. The power of story andthe wisdom of yoga enhance kids’ natural curiosity about the world while encouraging their innate creativity, and engaging them in mindful movement.

#2

Story and yoga engage kids. Kids love stories and yoga brings the story to life. Story and yoga improve literacy skills by encouraging kids to retell the story with yoga poses. Using their own words, they are able to recall the beginning, middle and end. Comprehension complete!

#3

Story and yoga capture the imagination. Yoga stories are a super way to encourage kids to use their imaginations. Imagination enhances critical thinking skills. When practicing the poses, they imagine the characters and setting. Kids learn that their imaginations are limitless and can take them on adventures, anywhere and anytime!

#4

Story and yoga improve visualization. Along with exercising the body and the imagination, story and yoga allow kids to visualize. They learn that stories come alive within their minds. Even without a book, kids can listen to a story and see it in their minds eye through visualization!

#5

Story and yoga teach sequential thinking and planning. Listening to story and following instructions on how to do a yoga pose reinforces an order of events. Sequential thinking is important in planning. Structure and syntax matter to the meaning and understanding of sentences, and you cannot balance in Tree Pose if you do not set it up correctly!

#6

Story and yoga build connections. Children must be able to build a connection to the characters and setting in a story. Yoga creates a connection between the mind and the body. Kids build compassion and empathy for themselves and others by connecting emotionally to the story!

#7

Story and yoga teach self-regulation. Yoga teaches us to control our bodymovements and to be mindful of our breath. Whether children are reading a story out loud or silently to their self, they need to regulate their voice, pace and cadence. They also use their breath to pause at periods and commas!

#8

Story and yoga teach mindfulness. Story and yoga both come from a place of stillness. Story settles the body down so the mind can listen, and yoga settles the mind down allowing us to become aware of our bodies. Kids become focused, purposeful in their yoga practice, and gain control of their own life!

#9

Story and yoga improve speaking and encourage self-expression. Vocal ability improves as the voice is used in tandem with postures. Kids build confidence when encouraged to express themselves through acting out the story with yoga postures!

#10

Story and yoga support multiple learning styles. Visual learners see the story through the yoga postures. Auditory learners hear the narrative and instructions to the poses, and kinesthetic learners notice and feel the body while practicing the yoga.

#11

Story and yoga encourage cooperation. Kids focus on the adventure, not the perfect posture. They learn the value of teamwork when they practice yoga with others. Whether listening or reading to a sibling gives them an opportunity to share and care for each other.

#12

Story and yoga encourage joy and a positive outlook. Kids love listening to stories. They enjoy retelling the story with yoga becoming a dog, an elephant and other aspects of the story. Combining stories and yoga is just plain fun!

Through the magic of story and the wisdom of yoga let the adventure begin!
